Components seated on the hose reel drum shaft – washers, bearings, spacers – must be held in a defined axial position. Ring 40182 seated in the groove of the 16mm shaft locks them against displacement, fixing their position without the need for nuts or screws.

Application

The retaining ring is installed in the groove of the hose reel drum shaft with a diameter of 16mm. Once seated in the groove, it protrudes beyond the shaft surface and forms a mechanical stop for adjacent components – washers, discs, or other parts of the drum assembly. It maintains the integrity of the assembly during disassembly and prevents components from shifting on their own during drum operation. It works directly with the shaft groove – the depth and width of the groove must correspond to the ring dimensions.

Symptoms – When to Replace

  • Axial play of drum components on the shaft – the ring has jumped out of the groove or is bent and no longer blocks effectively.
  • Permanently deformed ring – does not lie flat in the groove and does not provide full axial support.
  • Ring damaged during disassembly – spread beyond its elastic range or cut by an installation tool.
  • Missing ring – drum assembly components have free axial movement without a clear limit.

How to Select the Correct Part

The basis for selection is the 16mm shaft diameter and reference number 40182. The retaining ring must fit the groove in the shaft – one that is too large will not enter the groove; one that is too small will not seat securely. When replacing, also check the condition of the groove in the shaft – a bent or jumped-out ring may indicate excessive axial load on the assembly or a damaged groove. If the groove edges are worn, the new ring will jump out for the same reason as the previous one.

Compatibility

Kranzle catalogue part. Used among others in hose reel drums of Kranzle pressure washers with a 16mm shaft. Cooperates in the assembly with brass washer 40181 and other drum axle components. Verify compatibility with a specific model using reference number 40182 or the drum service diagram.

[faq]

Is retaining ring 40182 an external ring for a shaft or an internal ring for a bore?|It is an external ring – seated in the groove on the 16mm shaft, not in a housing bore. An external ring, once seated, contracts into the groove and protrudes around its circumference beyond the shaft surface, forming an axial stop. It must not be confused with internal rings designed for grooves in bores – they have the opposite spreading geometry and are not interchangeable.

Can a ring that has jumped out of the groove be reinstalled, or does it need to be replaced?|It depends on the condition of the ring after jumping out. If it is flat and undeformed – it can be reinstalled. If it is permanently bent or shows signs of excessive spreading, its elasticity is weakened and the ring will not seat securely in the groove. A ring that jumps out of the same groove repeatedly indicates a problem with the groove or excessive axial load on the assembly – not solely a worn ring.

What tools are required for installing and removing a 16mm retaining ring?|The correct tool is retaining ring pliers for external rings – the tips engage the holes in the ring and spread it in a controlled manner for seating in the groove. Installation without proper pliers – using a screwdriver or pliers – risks permanently deforming the ring or causing it to jump out during seating. The same applies to removal – proper pliers control the spreading; improvised tools make it impossible or damage the ring.

What does it mean if axial play in the drum assembly reappears after fitting a new ring?|If the new ring sits securely in the groove and axial play is still present, the cause is insufficient washer thickness in the assembly – there is a lack of clearance between the ring and the adjacent component. When assembling the drum assembly, check that all washers and spacer elements are in their correct positions. The retaining ring itself only eliminates movement beyond the groove – it does not compensate for missing spacer components.

Can the groove in the 16mm shaft become damaged, and how does this affect ring selection?|Yes – the groove edges can become worn through repeated ring jumping or installation with incorrect tools. A worn groove has excessive depth or uneven edges – a standard ring will not seat securely in it. In that case, replacing the ring alone will not resolve the axial play. Where visible groove damage is present, the condition of the shaft must be assessed and shaft replacement considered.
