Spring 40506 with dimensions 4.7x36x69mm operates in the piston assembly of the Kranzle pressure washer pump. It returns the piston to its starting position after each working stroke. Dimensions: 4.7mm is the wire diameter, 36mm is the external coil diameter, 69mm is the free length unloaded.

Application

The spring is mounted in the piston cylinder of the pump – at the piston or in the thrust seat of the piston guide, depending on the head design. It operates continuously with each shaft rotation. The longer free length (69mm) means a greater spring travel between the extended and working positions – which translates into a piston return force matched to the specific geometry of the pump head.

Replaced during pump service – when dismantling the head, replacing piston seals, or after identifying pressure irregularities not related to valves or seals.

Symptoms – when to replace

  • Irregular working pressure – rhythmic pulsation proportional to engine speed, not related to valves or seals.
  • Drop in maximum pressure without an obvious cause on the valve, seal or nozzle side.
  • Free length shorter than 69mm when measuring the removed spring – material fatigue without visible cracking.
  • Visible coil deformation, cracking or uneven coil pitch on inspection after removal.
  • Rhythmic knocking from the pump head area – particularly on cold start and with play in the cam assembly already ruled out.

How to select the right part

Selection must be based on all three dimensions simultaneously: wire 4.7mm, external diameter 36mm, free length 69mm.

Before ordering, measure the removed spring with a calliper: free length after removal from the pump, external coil diameter and wire diameter. In multi-cylinder pumps – if one spring shows wear, the others are usually in a similar condition. Replacing the full set during a single disassembly is more practical than returning to the pump a few months later.

Compatibility

Service part for piston pumps of Kranzle pressure washers. Verify the exact compatibility range by reference number 40506 and dimensions 4.7x36x69mm.

[faq]

How to measure spring wire diameter with a calliper?|Measure the wire where the coils are not compressed – ideally at the end coil, where the wire is most accessible. Press the calliper jaws perpendicularly to the wire axis.

Can a longer spring be fitted in a pump designed for 63mm as a temporary solution?|No – a longer spring when installed will be compressed to the same working length as the shorter one, but with higher pre-tension. The result is greater contact force on the piston than intended, which translates into higher load on the piston guide, faster seal wear and an altered pressure characteristic. In a multi-cylinder pump, unequal springs across cylinders additionally disrupt even operation. There is no safe temporary solution with a wrong spring – the correct repair is replacement with the right variant.

When replacing springs in a multi-cylinder pump, must all be replaced at once, or can only the damaged one be replaced?|Replacing only the damaged spring is possible, but in a multi-cylinder pump the springs operate under identical conditions and wear at the same rate. A new spring alongside fatigued ones has a different force characteristic – the pump operates with uneven pressure on individual pistons, which manifests as subtle pressure pulsation. With the head already open, the cost of replacing all springs is incomparably lower than the cost of a second disassembly. Also check the spring pressure discs at this point – they wear at a similar rate.

Can a piston spring be bought as a replacement from an industrial spring catalogue instead of the original 40506?|Technically yes, if the replacement has identical dimensions and a similar spring rate. The problem is that industrial spring catalogues list geometric dimensions but rarely specify the spring rate in a way that is easy to compare with the original. A spring with the same dimensions but from a different steel grade or with a different coil pitch may have a noticeably different force at the same working length. Without the ability to compare the characteristic with the original – use 40506.
